Land Rights in Brazil

The Brazilian supreme court recently passed a ruling that the Indian reservation Raposa-Serra do Sol, should remain as is. This represents a victory for Indian rights in Brazil, but remains a sobering reminder of the complexity of land rights. Rice farmers living on the reservation wanted the boundaries changed so that they could have some land. The Roraima and other indigenous groups have inhabited this land much longer than any farmers. But in a place were agricultural land is valuable and relatively scarce, we can't help but wonder the fate of such farmers, and how long indigenous groups will be able to live as they have historically, as the world population continues to grow.

this seems like such a win against really steep odds. wow. if only that was enough to keep life sustainable. land is so important and sometimes (don't tell anyone) i really question why in the world and how in the world private property got to be the way we think about land.. there's just something not right about it, always.
